India will host a high-level BRICS National Security Advisers meeting on June 22 and 23, with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval set to chair the gathering, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. The talks will focus on non-traditional security challenges confronting the world today, and are intended to lay the groundwork for the BRICS Summit scheduled in India in September.
India holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS bloc in 2024, making this meeting a significant diplomatic moment for New Delhi as it steers the group’s agenda for the year.
High-Profile Delegations Expected
Several senior officials from BRICS member states are confirmed to attend. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian NSA Sergei Shoigu will both participate, as will Iranian Supreme National Security Council Deputy Secretary Nezamipour. The current BRICS membership spans eleven nations: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
The breadth of representation reflects the bloc’s expanded membership following a wave of new additions, and underscores the growing geopolitical weight of the grouping.
Agenda Focuses on Emerging Threats and Technology
According to an MEA press release, discussions will examine how the nature of national security challenges is evolving and explore the role of new technologies in generating emerging security threats. Delegates will also review outcomes from recently held BRICS Joint Working Groups on Counter-Terrorism and on Security in the use of Information and Communication Technologies.
The meeting is designed to build consensus among member states ahead of the BRICS Summit, where leaders are expected to take up broader political and economic questions facing the bloc.
